What are the Five Elements

According to Chinese philosophy, the energy of the universe is manifested in the five elements; Wood, Water, Fire, Earth and Metal.
Five Element Acupuncture is an ancient form of acupuncture that works by treating a person at the levels of body, mind and spirit. We can observe this energy at work in different ways: five different pairings of organs, five distinct emotions, sounds, smells and colours. Within the philosophy different organs of the body correspond to each element, which in turn correspond to the seasons of the year. Treatment with Five Element Acupuncture helps a person move back into harmony with themselves, their emotions and their life as a whole.
This harmony is achieved by looking at the person as a whole being as well as understanding their symptoms. A Five Element practitioner places great importance on having a thorough understanding of the person, their environment, their history and the Five Elements working in their life.

A Five Element acupuncturist is carefully trained in understanding natural laws and using these to diagnose, can assist the body, mind and spirit to move back into full health.
The Acupuncturist will look for disharmony in the energy system (Qi) of the person, through various diagnostic techniques. They will look for blocks between the acupuncture meridians, which flow like rivers around the body, mind and spirit. They will look for which of the Five Elements is weakest and how that effects the person as a whole. They will look for how they can support the person through choice of acupuncture points and help them restore the body, mind and spirit to enhance the healing system to move back to a healthy state.
Fire
Fire is the energy of summer, relaxed and open. It gives us warmth, the capacity to love and to be loved. It enables us to mature and blossom and its function is to help us relate. Here we find our passion, our ability to feel joy in all our endeavors. Feeling emotionally protected we communicate with openness and honesty. The organs and meridians related to Fire are The Heart, small intestine, heart protector and triple heater. In the Chinese system the heart is the emperor of the Body Mind and Spirit therefore Fire has extra meridians to protect the heart.
Earth
Earth is the energy of late summer and a time of harvesting. This energy gives us the ability to nurture ourselves and others with compassion. By helping us feel connected to the earth it enables us to understand and give sympathy without losing our own centre. Our sense of satisfaction and nourishment comes from this element. The organs and meridians related to Earth are the Stomach and spleen.
Metal
Metal is the energy of autumn. It gives us our sense of quality and self worth, our capacity to look at what lies beyond ourselves and the power to let go. Giving us the ability to feel loss and grief, granting us the peace to move on . By using our instinct we find our way through the dark. The organs and meridians related to Metal are Lung and Colon.
Water
Water is the still cold energy of winter, pausing in time to regenerate and gather strength. This energy holds our identity giving us our sense of self. Water gives us the power to adapt and the will and drive to fulfil the potential given to us at birth. Our fear of non-existence gives us the impetus to take the necessary risks in life to realise our ambition. The organs and meridians related to Water are Bladder and Kidneys
Wood
Wood is the energy of spring; it rises up with vision and determination to realise the plan of growth and renewal. Wood gives us the structure and flexibility to create our lives with hope and optimism, overcoming obstacles and creating our path. The organs and meridians related to Wood are Liver and Gall Bladder.
The Meridian System
Each of the Five Elements has either two or four organs related to them, each of these organs have their own meridian (channel). This is where the vital energy(Qi) of our system flows and how we treat with the Five Elements. The Meridian System looks like a giant web, linking different areas of our body mind and spirit together. Its pathways make up a comprehensive yet complex body map that supplies Qi to every part of the system. The needles stimulate the Qi enabling enhancement of the healing system within each of us, leading to recovery or improvement of many conditions. A simple but complicated system
